The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the soft slap of water against the hull—just us and our captain, drifting out from Split before most people had finished their coffee. The light was that pale gold you only get early, and I could smell sunscreen already mixing with salt air. Our captain, Marin, asked if we wanted to see the Blue Lagoon or head for Hvar first. He grinned when I tried to pronounce “Pakleni”—I definitely got it wrong—and told us about his childhood swimming off those islands.

We chose the Blue Lagoon Croatia as our first stop. The water really is that clear—like glass over pebbles—and when I jumped in, it felt colder than I expected but in a good way. Afterwards we headed toward Zlatni Rat beach on Brac, which looked almost unreal from the water—this long tongue of sand curving into blue-green sea. We stopped for lunch at a little spot Marin recommended (not included, but worth it), where grilled fish came with lemon and bread that tasted like someone’s grandma made it. The sun got stronger by then and people started drifting onto the beach, so we decided to cruise along the coast instead of joining them. You can really do whatever you want on this private boat charter; there’s no set script except what you feel like that day.

If you’re curious about Vis or even the old navy base (which honestly sounded mysterious but we skipped this time), just ask your captain—they know all these spots by heart. Oh, and bring cash for the captain fee at the end (100€), plus fuel depends on how far you go—Marin explained it simply, no surprises. By late afternoon my skin smelled like salt and sunblock and I didn’t want to get off the boat yet…but eventually we had to head back.
