The experience

Hands grip the boat rail as it cuts toward Bisevo's Blue Cave, where sunlight hits the water and turns it the color of melted ice. The cave is the reason you're here: a natural pocket carved by sea and wind where the reflection off the limestone floor makes the whole space glow. You get maybe ten minutes inside, and the light shifts depending on the angle of the sun, so what you see is never quite what the person before you saw. The boat crew hands out waterproof jackets and snorkeling masks before you leave the dock, so you're not fumbling with gear later.

After the cave, the boat stops in Komiza, an old fisherman's town where the buildings are painted in faded pastels and the pace hasn't changed much in decades: breakfast here tastes like someone's grandmother made it. Then you swing past Vis caves for photos, pull into Budikovac Island where there's a sand beach and a bar if you want a cocktail between swims, and then Stiniva Cove, which is genuinely one of Europe's best beaches, though in summer the boat only stops long enough for pictures because the cove fills up fast. The whole day is built around the boat's schedule, not yours, so you move when the crew moves. That's what keeps five stops inside a single afternoon. The return to Split takes an hour and runs along the coast, which is when you actually see how many islands are out there.

Hvar town is the last stop, where you can climb up to Fortica fortress if you have the legs for it, or just sit in the main square and eat traditional Croatian lunch. The entrance ticket to the Blue Cave costs 24 euros in cash (18 euros April through June and September through October), and you need to bring it. The boat won't wait if you're late getting back to the dock.
