Raw cocoa, chocolate tasting, and the story behind both

A two-hour chocolate experience tour in Jaco Beach where you walk through the Central Pacific's only International Cocoa collection, taste raw cocoa fruit straight from the pod, watch the cocoa-to-chocolate production process, and sample an all-you-can-eat spread of chocolates, hot chocolate, and chocolate-drizzled tropical fruits with a live guide in English or Spanish. Strollers and service animals are welcome.

The Experience

Two hours covers the whole arc: the cocoa varieties on display, the history that shaped chocolate into what it is now, and the tasting itself. You start by walking through the International Cocoa collection — the only one in this region — where you'll see the different types of cocoa plants and learn where they come from and how they've moved through global trade. The guide walks you through the ancient origins of cocoa and its role in economies across centuries, then moves into what happens next: you taste the raw cocoa fruit before it becomes anything else, so you know what the starting material actually tastes like.

The production part comes next. You watch the cocoa beans transform into chocolate, seeing the steps that turn a pod into the finished product. Then the tasting begins: an all-you-can-eat spread of different chocolates — various types and styles — plus hot chocolate (the drink the Aztecs called the drink of the gods), and tropical fruits topped with chocolate. This is where the two hours become about your own pace: you taste what appeals to you, circle back to favorites, and spend the time on the flavors that stick.
