The experience

The first thing that hit me was the sound: somewhere above us, branches rustling and these sharp little squeaks. I looked up and there they were: white-faced capuchin monkeys watching us like we were the show. Our guide, Carlos, knew every one by name (or so he claimed). He told us about their family drama: alphas, betas, who’s sneaking snacks from whom. I tried not to stare too hard when one monkey crept down close enough to brush my shoulder. You’re not supposed to touch them (they’re wild), but if they touch you? That’s apparently a compliment.

After the monkey sanctuary, we drove out toward Rio Grande de Tarcoles. It’s a weird feeling standing on that bridge: hot sun on your arms and this slow-moving river below. Then you spot the crocodiles. Huge. Like logs with teeth. Some people took the boat tour for closer views and birdwatching (I skipped it, next time maybe), but even from above it felt unreal. There’s a souvenir stand nearby. I grabbed a cold drink mostly just to have something to do with my hands after all that adrenaline.

We ended up at this small beach near Jaco where Carlos set up chairs under some palms. The air smelled salty-sweet and there was this lazy hush except for distant waves and someone laughing at their own joke (maybe me). We actually saw two sloths curled up in a tree: one moved so slowly it looked fake until it blinked at us. Snacks came out (fruit, nothing fancy) and I just sat there thinking how none of this felt rushed or staged. Even now I can picture that sleepy sloth blinking down at us while Carlos poured drinks.
