The experience

The day starts before sunrise. You arrive at the meeting point, have coffee or tea, and watch the balloon inflate. The pilot, certified by Colombia's Civil Aeronautics authority, briefs you on the flight ahead. Then you step into the basket for a 30-minute drift over the coffee region's rolling terrain, seeing the landscape unfold in all directions without obstruction. The altitude and stillness let you spot the patchwork of plantations, valleys and forest that make up the Axis.

When you land, the ground crew greets you with a champagne toast and macadamia pecan pie.
