The experience

"¿Listo?" our pilot asked, grinning as he tugged at my harness straps one last time. I nodded, maybe too quickly, because my heart was thumping so loud I could barely hear the breeze. The launch spot outside Medellin felt both peaceful and charged, like everyone was holding their breath for that first step into open air. There were a few locals watching too, chatting in Spanish and laughing at someone’s nervous dance before takeoff (not me, I swear).

The moment we ran and lifted off, the city just dropped away beneath us. You can actually smell the eucalyptus from the hills below when the wind shifts: weird detail to notice while dangling over Bello, but it stuck with me. Our guide, Andrés, pointed out landmarks in both English and Spanish (he switched back and forth depending on who was listening) and kept checking if I was okay. He even offered to do some "adrenalina" moves: tight spirals that made my stomach flip. I tried one but honestly chickened out after a few seconds. Still worth it.

The whole paragliding flight lasted about 15 minutes, though it felt longer up there with all that space around you. We landed in a different field than we started because of the wind (apparently that happens sometimes), but they had a van ready to bring us back up. The pilots really seemed to know their stuff. They joked about weather superstitions while packing up the gear (which looked spotless by the way).
