The Experience
The first thing that hit me was the smell of fresh coffee drifting from Café Éxtasis as I waited in Buenavista’s main plaza. It’s a small town, but there’s always a gentle buzz—locals chatting, the odd dog napping under a bench. Our guide, Andrés, greeted us with a big grin and handed out forms to fill in. He double-checked everyone’s names and weights (they’re strict about safety here), then rounded us up for the ride up the hill.
The drive to the launch site is short but bumpy—windows down, you catch whiffs of wet earth and hear birds you never notice in the city. Up top, there’s this wide-open view: rolling green hills patchworked with coffee farms and clouds drifting low enough you feel you could touch them. The pilot gave us a quick rundown—how to sit, what to do with our legs—and honestly, my heart was pounding by then.
Lifting off is nothing like I expected. One second your feet are on grass; next thing you know, you’re floating quietly above it all. The wind’s cool against your face and everything below looks tiny—tiny houses, tiny people waving up at us. We caught a few thermals that made us rise higher; Andrés pointed out the river winding through the valley and snapped some GoPro shots mid-flight (I got those later by email). The whole flight lasted maybe 15 minutes—it felt both longer and shorter somehow—but I landed grinning like an idiot.
