The experience

The day starts with pickup at 8:00 am in Popayan and a drive north into the Cauca department, climbing toward the Central Range. A short stop along the way frames the landscape, the Andes rising around you, before you reach Silvia itself, a village set in a valley the region calls the "Switzerland of America." You get about two hours to walk the main plaza on your own, see the welcome sign and the Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Parish, and browse the indigenous market where local artisans sell handicrafts and traditional goods.

At noon you stop for a regional lunch: your choice of fish, meat or chicken with soup, salad, rice and a drink. After eating, the tour heads to the Guambia region, where the Misak people have lived for generations. A local guide walks you through a botanical garden and explains the Misak worldview, their music and Andean songs. The core of this part is hands-on: you visit the community's sacred sites and put on their typical colorful woven costumes, which means you stand in the landscape dressed as the Misak do, able to photograph and experience their cultural practice directly rather than watching from outside. The return to Popayan takes the afternoon, with arrival around 5:00 pm.

A native guide who speaks Spanish or English leads the entire day, so the cultural context comes from someone inside the community, not translated secondhand. The tour is structured to keep money flowing back to the Misak and Silvia communities through entrance fees, the guide's work and the lunch purchase, making it a form of tourism that sustains rather than extracts.
