Canyoning Guatape River: jumps, slides and waterfall descents
Leap through waterfalls and slide down river rocks for a fresh adrenaline rush
Canyoning on Guatape River is a guided activity where you jump into natural pools, slide down rock formations and rappel down waterfalls with helmet, harness and neoprene suit provided. The five-hour outing starts with a 40-minute walk from Samaria village to the canyon, includes a light snack during the activity, and ends with a 10-minute walk back to transport. A live guide speaks English or Spanish, and children from age 10 are welcome.
The Experience
Transport picks you up from the village and drives to Samaria, where the walk to the canyon entrance begins. The 40-minute hike gets you to the starting point, where you'll suit up in neoprene, helmet and harness. A guide walks through the safety setup and what to expect before you enter the water.
The activity itself moves through a series of controlled jumps into pools of natural water, slides down smooth rock sections, and rappels down waterfalls. The guide leads each descent and stays with the group throughout. Between the technical sections you'll have time to catch your breath, and the operator brings a light snack and takes photos and video during the tour so you have a record of the day.
After the final descent, a 10-minute walk takes you back to where transport waits to return you to the departure point. The whole outing runs five hours from start to finish.

Is this one for you? This is a shared group activity led by a guide, so you're not managing the technical setup or the descents yourself—the guide controls the pace and safety of each jump, slide and rappel. What's the walk like before the canyoning starts?
From Samaria village to the canyon entrance is approximately 40 minutes on foot, and you'll be carrying your gear. The walk is part of the experience but not technical climbing—it's the approach to the water.
Do I need canyoning experience to do this?
No experience is required. A live guide leads every jump, slide and descent, and all the technical setup—helmet, harness, ropes—is provided and explained before you start. Moderate physical fitness is needed because of the activity level and the walk in, but the guide controls the pace of the descents themselves.
What happens if I'm not comfortable with a particular jump or slide?
The guide is there throughout and leads each section. If you're unsure about a specific descent, talk to the guide—they manage the group's safety and can advise on what suits your comfort level.
Is there food included, and when do we eat?
A light snack is included during the tour, eaten between the technical sections of the canyon. It's not a full meal, just enough to refuel during the activity.
What's included in the gear, and do I need to bring anything?
Helmet, harness, ropes and neoprene suit are all provided. Bring water, a change of clothes and footwear that can get wet—water shoes or old sneakers work well. The operator also makes audiovisual recordings during the tour that you can take home.
Can children do this activity?
Children are welcome from age 10. They'll use the same safety gear as adults and follow the same guided descents, scaled to their size and comfort.
