Canyoning El Chispero Colombia: jumps, slides and rappels
Jump into waterfalls, rappel down rock faces, and slide through a canyon carved by water
Canyoning El Chispero is a four-hour activity in Colombia where you jump, slide and rappel through a canyon full of waterfalls near the village of Vallejuelo. A guide in English or Spanish leads small groups through the route, which includes a 3-meter jump, natural slides, rappels at two waterfalls, and a stop at a rock formation called the rings for a light snack. Helmet, wetsuit, harness and ropes are provided; you need at least moderate fitness and must be 15 or older.
The Experience
You start at the operator's base where the guide runs through the safety setup and gear check before transport takes you to the canyon entrance at Vallejuelo. The route opens with a 3-meter jump into a pool, then moves into a natural slide and two rappels down waterfalls. The canyon itself is the draw—water-carved rock, pools between drops, and the physical problem of moving through it with rope and harness, not just watching from a trail.
Midway through, the group reaches a spot called the rings where you stop for a light snack before continuing deeper into the canyon. The walk out takes about 30 minutes once you leave the water, so the full outing runs four hours from start to finish. The guide handles rope setup and timing; you handle the jumps, slides and rappels themselves.
