The experience
Six to eight hours gives you time to move through three distinct Tianjin landmarks without rushing. Your guide meets you at the cruise port exit and drives you first to the Porcelain House, a 1920s French-style colonial villa whose exterior is covered in thousands of pieces of ancient porcelain. The 5,000-square-yard interior holds a museum of porcelain and antiques (marble carvings, crystal, semi-precious gems) collected by the owner, Zhang Lianzhi. It's the kind of place where every surface tells a story about how the building came together.
After the Porcelain House, you move through the Five Great Avenues, an area of over 2,000 garden-style villas built during the 1920s and 1930s by occupying powers. Your guide introduces you to Tianjin's food culture over lunch at a local restaurant: Tianjin cuisine is famous across China as the food of the country's fourth-largest city. The meal is included, and you get one bottle of water per person during the tour. If you want to see the villas from a horse-drawn carriage, that's available at your own expense.
The final stop is the Tianjin Eye, a 394-foot ferris wheel built directly over the Yongle Bridge: the first and only observation wheel constructed above a bridge. Each of the 64 passenger capsules holds 8 people, and a full rotation takes 30 minutes. From the top, views stretch as far as 25 miles into the distance. After the ride, your driver takes you back to the cruise port.
