The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby or Tianjin International Cruise Port and walks you through the neighborhoods that shaped the city. Ancient Culture Street is the first stop: a warren of traditional alleys lined with boutique shops and snack stalls where you'll try local specialties like sweet ears, red bean dessert and Tianjin crepe as you move through. BinJiang Dao BuXing Jie, the city's most fashionable pedestrian street, comes next, packed with brand-name stores and the kind of crowds that make it feel like a major international shopping district.

Lunch is dim sum or dumplings at a restaurant your guide knows, then you visit the city's largest shopping mall: a striking structure designed by the New York architecture firm KPF that won a 2010 AIA Design Award. The tour continues along Italian Style Street, the former Italian Concession (1901–1947) that still holds restaurants, shops and bars, and moves into the Haihe Culture Quarter, a riverside development ringed by European and American-influenced architecture. You'll walk the Riverside Promenade facing the Haihe River and Tianjin Railway Station, passing the Jiefang Bridge (a steel movable bridge built by the French Municipal Council in 1902) before your guide returns you to your starting point.

The tour runs 4 hours total. You'll be on your feet most of that time, moving between neighborhoods and stopping to eat and look around. Moderate fitness is expected. The operator does not recommend this for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns or pregnancy.
