The experience

You're picked up at Tianjin International Cruise Port and driven to Tianjin Train Station, where you board a bullet train to Beijing with your private guide. The train does the travel work while you settle in: no navigating the station alone, no language puzzle at the ticket counter. Your guide stays with you the whole way, so the moment you arrive in Beijing, you're already oriented.

Tiananmen Square comes first. Your guide walks you past the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, and the Monument of the People's Heroes, explaining the revolutionary history as you move through the plaza. Then you head to the Forbidden City, the largest imperial palace in the world and a UNESCO site that housed 24 emperors across the Ming and Qing dynasties. You spend roughly 1.5 hours here exploring at your own pace: the Hall of Great Supremacy with its emperor's throne, the Hall of Middle Harmony, the Hall of Preserving Harmony where royal exams and banquets once took place, the emperor's sleeping chambers, and a clock museum displaying pieces from the Ming and Qing periods. The Imperial Garden closes out the palace visit, with its peonies, pine trees, pagodas and limestone sculptures. Your guide narrates the stories of each space, but you set the speed and decide where to linger.

The return journey mirrors the arrival: your guide escorts you back to Tianjin Train Station, you ride the bullet train back to Tianjin, and you're dropped at the cruise port. The whole day runs seven hours from pickup to drop-off. You choose between 1st Class or Business Class train seats when you book. Both are included. Book at least eight days ahead.

Top questions

What is the Forbidden City actually like when you walk through it?

The Forbidden City is a sprawling palace complex of interconnected halls, courtyards and gardens built over 600 years ago. You'll see the three largest ceremonial halls (the Hall of Great Supremacy where emperors held court, the Hall of Middle Harmony for preparation, and the Hall of Preserving Harmony where royal exams and banquets took place) plus the emperor's private chambers, a clock museum with Ming and Qing pieces, and the Imperial Garden with its trees, pagodas and stone sculptures. Your guide walks you through the layout and the history of each space while you move at your own pace.

Do I need to speak Chinese to get around Beijing on this tour?

No. Your private English-speaking guide meets you at the cruise port in Tianjin and stays with you the entire day: on the train, at Tiananmen Square, and through the Forbidden City. The guide handles all communication and navigation, so language is not a barrier.

How much walking is involved in this tour?

The tour involves 10,000 to 20,000 steps across the day, equivalent to climbing 30 floors. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. You should have at least moderate physical fitness to complete it.

What happens at Tiananmen Square?

Tiananmen Square is China's most famous public plaza, surrounded by major national buildings. Your guide shows you the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China, the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall, the Monument of the People's Heroes, and the Gate of Heavenly Peace. Your guide explains the revolutionary history of the square as you walk through it.

How does the bullet train work on this tour?

Your guide picks you up at Tianjin International Cruise Port, drives you to Tianjin Train Station, and boards the bullet train with you to Beijing. The train is fast and comfortable. 1st Class and Business Class seats are both included depending on which option you choose at checkout. The same guide escorts you back to the train station at the end of the day for the return journey to Tianjin.

What's included in the price?

Port pickup and drop-off at Tianjin International Cruise Port, round-trip bullet train seats (1st Class or Business Class, your choice), a private English-speaking guide for the entire day, and an experienced driver are all included. Lunch and gratuities are not included.
