The Experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby in the morning, and you're in the car heading to Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding before the crowds arrive. The base spreads across a real research facility, not a zoo — you'll walk past the panda playground, the animal hospital, the museum, and a lake where the pandas actually live. The newborns are in a separate area, and your guide will explain what you're seeing: which pandas are teenagers still learning to climb, which are adults that prefer to sleep most of the day. You get to stand close enough to photograph them, and the whole thing takes a few hours without feeling rushed.

After that, you head back into the city, and this is where the tour gets flexible. Your guide will talk through what you want to see — temples, markets, parks, old streets — and you decide together. Most people stop at Wenshu Monastery, which has been standing since the Tang dynasty and holds over 500 pieces of classical painting and calligraphy. The courtyards are quiet, and you'll see locals burning incense and praying. Then Wuhou Memorial Temple, built in the 6th century to honor Emperor Liu Bei and his prime minister, with separate halls for each of them and a tomb on the grounds.
