The experience

“You’re going to want to smell this,” our guide Carolina said, holding out a glass just as the sun hit the rows of vines behind her. I’d barely finished laughing at my friend’s attempt to pronounce “Carmenere” (honestly, we all butchered it) when that first swirl of wine hit: kind of earthy, but there was something else. Maybe eucalyptus? The air was chilly even though it was almost noon in Talagante, and you could hear birds somewhere in the old park trees. I kept thinking how different it felt from Santiago, even though it’s only about 40 minutes away by bus.

The Sibaris tour at Viña Undurraga isn’t rushed. We wandered through the family’s park (those trees are older than my grandparents), then into the vineyards where Carolina pointed out which grapes go into their Syrah versus their Sauvignon Blanc. There’s this moment where you step into the underground cellar and suddenly everything goes quiet and cool. You can actually smell the stone and old barrels. I didn’t expect to see a Mapuche exhibition down there either: Carolina explained how the land belonged to them long before any grapevine showed up. That part stuck with me.

By the time we sat down for our wine tasting flight, everyone was chatting like we’d known each other for ages. The reserve wines were poured one after another. I tried to write notes on my phone but gave up after two glasses. It just felt better to listen to Carolina tell stories about harvests gone wrong or right, or how her uncle still helps with picking grapes every year. We left with stained lips, a little sun on our faces, and a bottle tucked under my arm for later. Still can’t decide if it was the wine or that feeling of being let in on an old secret, maybe both.
