Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Viña Cousiño Macul historical tour

  • Walk main historical sites
  • Learn family Cousiño history
  • Explore sustainable vineyard practices
  • Visit premium wine winery
  • See 19th century wine tanks
  • Tour century-old wine cellars
  • Visit winery museum
  • Taste three glasses of wine

Ever wondered what a 150-year-old vineyard smells like? I didn’t, not really, until we stepped through the gates at Cousiño Macul in Santiago. The city noise just sort of faded behind us — it was all gravel crunching underfoot and this faint sweetness in the air, like sun-warmed grapes and old wood. Our guide, Sofía, waved us over with a smile that felt more like an invitation than a routine. She started off with a story about the Cousiño family (I’m still not sure I caught every detail — her accent was charming but I got distracted by the vines twisting everywhere).

We wandered past rows of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes while Sofía pointed out some weirdly specific things — like how they use leftover grape skins for compost. There were these massive old tanks from the 1800s, chipped and cool to the touch (I couldn’t resist running my hand along one when no one was looking). Inside the cellar, it got quiet in that way stone buildings do. The air changed — colder, almost dusty but not unpleasant. Someone’s phone buzzed and it sounded out of place.

The wine tasting itself was… well, I’m no expert. But sipping three different wines right there where they’re made felt special somehow. My favorite had this peppery thing going on; Sofía tried to teach me how to swirl properly but honestly I just laughed and nearly spilled mine. We talked about family traditions and she told us about her grandfather’s harvest stories — you could tell she meant it.

I left thinking about how places hold onto memories longer than people sometimes do. If you want a day trip in Santiago that feels both relaxed and real (and yes, includes wine), this is probably it.
