The Experience
We almost missed our pickup in Toronto because I couldn’t find my other shoe — classic me. Our guide, Samir, just laughed when we finally made it to the bus, a little out of breath and apologizing too much. The drive out was quieter than I thought it’d be; everyone kind of stared out at the grey sky and tried to guess if we’d need raincoats. (Spoiler: yes.)
The first thing you notice at Niagara Falls is the sound — this low, endless roar that sort of vibrates in your chest. We did the Hornblower cruise first (I wore the poncho but still got drenched), and honestly I couldn’t stop grinning like an idiot as the mist soaked my face. There’s something about being that close to all that water crashing down that makes you feel tiny and weirdly alive. Samir pointed out where people used to go over in barrels — he said it so casually I had to double-check if he was joking.
After drying off a bit at Table Rock Welcome Centre (the fudge smell inside is ridiculous), we went down into these tunnels for the Journey Behind the Falls. The walls were damp and cold, and you could hear the falls thundering overhead — louder than upstairs somehow. It’s hard not to touch everything just because it feels ancient and slick under your hands. Then up Skylon Tower for views that made me dizzy; I kept trying to spot our tiny boat from earlier but mostly just ended up squinting into the spray.
On the way back, we stopped for maple syrup tasting — which I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did. The woman pouring samples taught us how to tell real syrup from fake (there’s a trick with how it runs off your spoon) and let us try some fudge too. Honestly, I still think about that maple flavor sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
