Three ways back from the waterfall, one cave system to explore

A private guided hike through Duncan Caves and the Duncan Escarpment Provincial Nature Reserve near Collingwood, Ontario, covering 9.5–10.5km in five hours. You walk the same route through the Metcalfe Crevice, caves and a waterfall, then choose one of three return loops that vary in length and terrain: some emphasizing lookouts, others cave and crevice exploration. Your guide customizes the experience based on your interests and fitness, and you'll receive photos and videos afterward.

The experience

The hike starts near the Metcalfe Crevice, where you'll explore the caves before ascending Metcalfe Rock. Along the way you pass several lookout points over Kolapore Creek Valley, then move through mature forest with ancient white cedars and deep crevices. A waterfall marks the midpoint. You stop there for a break and lunch before the return leg, which is where the three route options come in. Your guide works with you to pick the loop that matches your energy and interests, so the second half of the day is genuinely yours to shape.

This is a private tour, so you won't be paired with other hikers. Your guide arrives with a headlamp and crampons (spring and fall, when needed), and you'll get a Google photo album with pictures, videos and a reel at the end. Minimum group size is two people. The terrain requires closed-toe hiking boots or running shoes and a moderate level of fitness. The five-hour commitment is real, but the guide adjusts pace and stops to match the group. After you finish, The Roost Winery and Vineyard sits only 2.5km from the start point if you want to wind down with cold-climate wines.

Is this one for you?The hike runs five hours over uneven terrain with cave scrambling and moderate elevation gain, so it suits hikers with solid fitness and a willingness to move at pace. The private format and three return-route options mean your guide shapes the day around your interests and energy, not a fixed itinerary. Book this one if you want to choose how much cave exploration or how many lookouts you get, rather than follow a set loop.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 13 years). Under 4: they can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly is the Duncan Caves hike like compared to other trails near Collingwood?

Duncan Caves and Metcalfe Rock combine cave exploration with forest walking and lookout views over the valley. The caves themselves are the main draw (you walk through the Metcalfe Crevice and explore deep crevices in the mature forest) rather than a ridge walk or open-air loop. The waterfall break halfway through gives you a natural rest point before choosing your return route.

How much of the hike is actually inside caves versus walking through forest?

The caves and crevices are concentrated in the first half, particularly around the Metcalfe Crevice near the start and the deep crevices in the forest section. You're not underground for the entire hike. Most of the walk is through forest with lookout points and the waterfall break, then your chosen return route back to the start.

Can I really choose my own route on the way back, or is that just marketing?

You genuinely choose from three different return loops, each varying in length from 8.5km to 10.5km total. Your guide presents the options based on what you want (more lookouts or more cave and crevice exploration), and you decide which one suits your energy level and interests at that point in the day.

What do I need to bring, and what does the guide provide?

Bring water, snacks, appropriate weather-based clothing and closed-toe hiking boots or running shoes. Your guide provides a headlamp and crampons when needed in spring and fall. You'll also receive a photo album with pictures, videos and a reel after the hike.

Is this hike suitable for someone who is reasonably fit but hasn't hiked in a while?

The operator recommends a moderate level of fitness for this hike. Five hours and 9.5–10.5km is a real commitment, but your guide adjusts the pace and stops to match the group, and you have three route options to choose from based on how you're feeling at the midpoint.
