Winter transforms the caves into something you won't see in summer

A private guided snowshoe hike near Collingwood takes you 5 kilometers across the Niagara Escarpment into Singhampton Caves, where snow and ice-covered walls create a contrast you only get in winter. Your guide customizes the cave exploration to your comfort level and interests, and the hike includes snowshoes, crampons, a headlamp and hot chocolate on the return. Minimum two people per booking. The full outing runs 2.5 to 3 hours.

The experience

What makes winter different here is that the caves are less crowded and easier to move through, snow levels out the ground, and the contrast between the white snow, dark rock and sparkling ice on the walls is the draw most people come for. The caves open to the sky, so if tight spaces make you uneasy, you're not trapped underground. Your guide will take the same entry and exit route with everyone, but once inside, they'll shape what you explore based on your abilities and what interests you.

The hike itself is 5 kilometers across a mature deciduous forest on top of the escarpment before you drop into the caves. You'll wear snowshoes for the forest section and crampons, spikes that slip onto your boots, for traction on ice. A headlamp comes with the gear so you can see into the darker passages. After you've worked through the caves, the group stops for hot chocolate before heading back to the starting point. Bring water, snacks and weather-appropriate boots and clothing. The guide will send you a Google photo album with pictures, videos and a reel once the hike is done.

This is a private tour, so you won't be paired with other hikers. The minimum is two people per booking, and children are welcome from age 4. A live guide leads in English and can answer questions about the caves and the escarpment as you go.
