The experience
Nottawasaga Bluffs Caves draw summer visitors, but winter opens a different route. You snowshoe 5.5 km across the open Niagara Escarpment before entering denser forest on the way to the keyhole: a 1-meter-high natural arch that marks the cave entrance. The snow levels the ground inside, making navigation easier than in warmer months, and the contrast between the snow, the cave walls and the sparkling ice-covered rock is the draw here. After exploring the main caves, you stop at an epic lookout and drink hot chocolate while taking in the view, then head into the Best Caves: long narrow crevices that offer more closed, underground discovery than the open passages of the nearby Singhampton system.
The tour runs 2.5 to 3 hours and stays private: you will not be paired with other hikers. Your guide brings snowshoes, crampons (spikes that slip onto your boots for traction on ice), and a headlamp. You bring water, snacks and weather-appropriate boots and clothing. After the hike, the operator encourages you to warm up at one of the local spots nearby: Giffen's Country Market in Glen Huron or one of the cafes in Creemore for a hot beverage. At the end of your adventure, you receive a Google photo album with pictures, videos and a reel.
