Cooking Class at La Plantation: Learn Khmer Dishes
You learn to cook with the peppers the restaurant grows.
A cooking class at La Plantation on Cambodia's South Coast where you make traditional Khmer dishes from scratch, starting with an introduction to the spices grown on the property's pepper farm. The class runs two hours in the morning and includes lunch of what you've cooked. Children from age 4 are welcome, and an English-speaking guide leads the instruction.
The experience
The class starts at 10am at La Plantation restaurant, where you begin with a walk through the pepper farm to see the Kampot peppers and other spices the kitchen uses. From there you move into the cooking space and learn to prepare three traditional Khmer dishes: green mango salad with dehydrated Kampot green pepper, amok fish cooked in banana leaves, and a green curry with vegetables marinated in red long pepper. You work through each one with hands-on instruction, and the guide walks you through technique and the reasoning behind the flavors.
At lunch you sit down and eat what you've made, which is the point. You taste the dish as it's meant to be eaten rather than as a demonstration. A Kampot pepper ice cream rounds out the meal. The class wraps in time for the afternoon, and you leave with the recipes so you can remake the dishes at home.
