The Experience
We met Russo right at the Sheraton in Leblon—he’s lived in Vidigal most of his life and honestly, you can tell. He greeted us like old friends, and before I knew it we were weaving up the hill on foot. The air changed as soon as we left the main road—music from a window somewhere above, someone frying onions for lunch (that smell!). Russo pointed out Morro Dois Irmãos behind us and laughed when I tried to say it right. I definitely didn’t.
Soon we reached Sitiê Ecological Park. It used to be a dump—Russo told us stories about how neighbors turned it into this wild green space with vegetable gardens and shady trees. There was a group of kids playing soccer nearby, their voices echoing off the graffiti walls. The colors here are loud but somehow peaceful too. We stopped at the Olympic Village—he showed us where he played basketball as a kid—and then climbed higher past murals by local artists (one of them waved from his stoop).
The view from Arvrão really got me—city stretching out one way, ocean the other. We paused for cold drinks at Bar da Laje; honestly, I could’ve stayed there all afternoon just watching clouds drift over Rio. Russo told us about Pope John Paul II visiting the chapel here back in 1980—I hadn’t expected that bit of history tucked between all this life and color.
I still think about those steep alleys and how everyone seemed to know Russo by name. You get sweaty climbing up but no one cares; people nod or smile as you pass. By the time we wound back down through shortcuts lined with more street art, it felt like we’d seen a side of Rio most visitors miss—even if my legs complained later.
