See Rocinha the way locals do, without the distance of a bus window.

A private walking tour of Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro's largest favela, led by bilingual guides who grew up in the community. You walk the alleys and rooftops for three hours, starting with pickup from your hotel in Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon, and learn the neighborhood's history and daily life directly from residents.

3h

Step-by-step itinerary

Walking tour of Rocinha favela

  • Meet guides Maka and Obi Basilio
  • Walk through Rocinha alleys and rooftops
  • Visit local shops and cultural projects
  • Enjoy local restaurants if hungry

The Experience

The tour starts with a pickup from your hotel—the driver collects you from Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon, then heads toward Rocinha. On the way, you pass Morro Dois Irmãos, the twin peaks that frame Rio's south side. Once in the favela, the walking begins: you move through the alleys on foot, climbing where the streets narrow and opening onto rooftops where you can see across the whole community. The guide—one of the Basilio brothers or someone they've trained—points out the shops, the cultural projects, the places where people actually live and work, not the angles a tour bus shows.

Three hours is the full stretch. You stop at local restaurants if hunger hits, and the guide answers questions about what you're seeing: the history of the place, how the community works, what daily life looks like from the inside. This is not a performance—it's a conversation between people in the same space. The rooftop views are part of it, but the real pull is the access: you're walking where residents walk, not observing from outside.

The company is family-run by two brothers born and raised here, which changes what the tour actually is. They organized these walks to offer travelers something genuine instead of the usual favela spectacle. Your guide speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, so language isn't a barrier. Transportation is included in the price, and the minimum age is 18.

Top questions

What's the difference between this tour and the big group buses that drive through Rocinha?

This tour is on foot, which means you walk the actual alleys and climb to the rooftops instead of watching from a vehicle window. The guides are locals who grew up here, not outsiders narrating from a script. Three hours gives you time to stop and talk, not just pass through.

Do I need to be fit to do this tour?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it does involve walking uphill through narrow alleys and climbing to rooftops. If stairs or steep terrain concern you, mention it when you book so the guide can adjust the route.

Can I get picked up from my hotel in Copacabana or Ipanema?

Yes. Pickup is included from hotels in Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon. The tour itself takes place in Rocinha, but the driver collects you from your accommodation and brings you back after the three hours are done.

What languages does the guide speak?

The guide is bilingual and speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, so you can communicate in whichever language you're comfortable with.

Is food included, or do I need to bring money for restaurants?

Food and drinks are optional. If you get hungry during the tour, you can stop at local restaurants and pay for what you eat. The guide can recommend places, but eating is your choice.
