summary

Summary

Walk through Rocinha favela with a resident guide, experience daily rhythms and honest moments

You’ll walk through Rocinha favela with someone who lives there, tasting street snacks and hearing stories you won’t find in guidebooks. Meet locals as they go about their day, feel the energy of the streets and murals, and leave with new perspectives you’ll keep thinking about long after.

The first thing I noticed stepping into Rocinha was the music — somewhere above us, someone had their radio on loud enough to spill down the narrow steps. Our guide, Marcelo, grew up here. He waved to a neighbor selling pastries from her window and handed me one — I think it was called “empada,” warm and flaky, and honestly I almost dropped it when a motorbike zipped past way too close for comfort. The smell of frying onions mixed with something sweet hung in the air. It’s noisy but not in a bad way — more like everyone’s just living right on top of each other, voices bouncing off painted walls.

Marcelo kept stopping to point out little things: a mural he helped paint as a kid, the shortcut kids take to school (I’d never have found that alley myself), even where his cousin fixes shoes. We passed a group of kids playing football with a half-flat ball — one of them grinned at me like he knew I was totally out of place but didn’t mind. There’s this rhythm to Rocinha that’s hard to explain unless you walk it. At one point we ducked under laundry lines and I got tangled for half a second; Marcelo laughed and said everyone does at least once.

I didn’t expect how open people were — or how many times strangers would say hi or ask where I was from. There’s still graffiti everywhere but some of it’s beautiful, not just tags. The view looking back toward Rio is wild; you can see the city glittering below but up here it feels like its own world. By the time we left, my shoes were dusty and my head was full of stories I probably wouldn’t have heard anywhere else.
