What’s included

Your morning includes entrance to Morro Dois Irmãos trail plus a moto-taxi lift from Praça do Vidigal up into the favela before you start hiking with your local guide toward sunrise over Rio de Janeiro—and yes, part of what you pay helps fund social projects right in Vidigal itself.

The city lights of Rio were still flickering when we squeezed onto the back of a moto-taxi at Praça do Vidigal. I’d never ridden one before—my hands gripped the seat and the driver just grinned in the rearview, weaving us through narrow streets while samba played somewhere behind a window. It was barely 5am but people were already chatting on corners, someone selling coffee out of a thermos. The air smelled like rain from last night, mixed with frying dough.

Our guide, Lucas, met us at the top—he grew up here and knew everyone by name. He called the trail “Bico da Pedra,” which I hadn’t heard before. We started hiking by flashlight, shoes crunching over loose gravel. At one point Lucas stopped to show us graffiti that told stories about Vidigal’s past—I only caught half of it because I was out of breath, but he laughed and waited for me to catch up. The climb took maybe an hour? Time gets weird in the dark; all you hear is your own breathing and sometimes dogs barking far below.

At the summit, it was quiet except for wind moving through grass. I didn’t expect how soft the light would be as the sun came up over Rio—gold on the ocean, haze over favelas, Christ the Redeemer tiny in the distance. Everyone just stood there for a while, not really saying anything. Someone passed around pão de queijo from their bag (still warm). On the way down we walked through Vidigal again—kids waving before school, old men playing cards outside a shop. Lucas pointed out where some of our tour money goes: murals on walls, new benches in little parks. That stuck with me more than I thought it would.
