The Experience

Ever wondered if you could actually stand above Rio, looking down at the whole city like it’s a map? That’s what I kept thinking as we started the Pedra da Gávea hike, right in the thick green of Tijuca Forest. Our guide Rodrigo—he’s got this easy laugh and knows every twist of the trail—handed out harnesses for the tricky part ahead. I was already sweating, not just from the sticky morning air but from nerves. There’s something about hearing monkeys somewhere above you and smelling that earthy, almost sweet forest floor that makes you feel small but kind of brave.

We stopped a lot, honestly more than I expected, which was good because my legs were burning by the time we reached Carrasqueira—the part everyone talks about. Rodrigo showed us where to put our hands and feet; he even told me to “breathe like you’re blowing out birthday candles” when I froze halfway up (it actually helped). The rock felt rough under my palms and there was this cool wind suddenly, even though below it was still muggy. At one point, someone in our group tried to say “Carrasqueira” right and Rodrigo nearly doubled over laughing—his accent is Carioca through and through.

The last push to the summit felt endless but then we were there, all of Rio stretched out below: Cristo Redentor tiny on its hilltop, beaches curling around blue water, planes drifting in over Lagoa. I didn’t really talk much up there; nobody did for a minute. It’s weird how quiet it gets above all that noise. Rodrigo took photos for everyone—he’s got a knack for angles—and I still look at mine when I need a boost back home. The way the light hit the rocks late afternoon… well, you’ll see.

What’s included

Your day includes expert guidance from an experienced bilingual local guide who provides safety equipment for Carrasqueira, group breaks whenever needed, constant support along the trail, plus photos and videos so you don’t miss any moment—even drone shots if arranged ahead of time.
