The Experience
The day kicked off early—by 8 am, we were already at the trailhead, just as the park gates opened. The air felt cool and damp, with that earthy smell you only get in the Atlantic Forest after a bit of rain. Our guide, Lucas, handed out helmets and harnesses right away—no messing around here. As we started up the path, I could hear birds calling overhead and caught sight of a tiny marmoset darting through the branches. The first stretch was shaded and green, but don’t let that fool you—the incline gets your legs working pretty quick.
About two hours in, sweat dripping down my back, we reached Carrasqueira—the infamous rocky section everyone talks about. It’s a 30-meter scramble that looks way scarier in person than it does in photos. Lucas set up the rope and showed us how to clip in. My hands were shaking a bit (not gonna lie), but he talked us through every move. Once you get past that part, the trees thin out and suddenly Rio opens up below you—beaches, city blocks, all of it spread out like a map. The summit itself is this wide stone plateau where everyone just sort of flops down to catch their breath and snap photos. We hung out for a while—ate some snacks, watched paragliders drift by—before heading back down the same way, rappelling Carrasqueira with Lucas guiding each step.
