The Experience

The forest floor is soft underfoot, still damp from the night. Your guide meets you early, before the heat settles in, and you start on the Eremita Trail along the Carimã River—about 1.3 kilometers through the trees, which sounds short until you realize you're stopping every few minutes because there's another waterfall, and then another, and the water is cold and clear and you're already thinking about getting in. Three falls on this trail alone, each one with a pool deep enough to swim in, and your guide knows the history of the place as you walk—the geology, the plants, what lives in the river. It's not a lecture; it's just what comes up naturally when you're standing in front of something that old.

After the first trail, you get back in the vehicle for the short drive to the Carimã Trail, which runs along the Tamanduá River. This one is only 400 meters, but it's steeper, more exciting—the kind of walk where you're using your hands sometimes, paying attention to where you step. Two more waterfalls here, both with plenty of space to wade in, to stand under the flow if you want. Between the trails, the guide is taking photos the whole time, and you get all of them free at the end. The whole thing is maybe three to four hours from start to finish, which means you're done by early afternoon and the rest of your day is still yours.

What matters: you don't need to be fit or experienced. The hike is easy to moderate, and the guide adjusts the pace. You get safety equipment, bottled water, and insurance that covers accidents. If you're traveling with kids, they sit on a lap during the vehicle part. The only real limits are if you have spinal issues or are pregnant—the terrain isn't right for that.
