The experience
The tour starts with a drive to the park's trails and walkways, where you walk 40 minutes to an hour facing the falls with views across to the Argentine side. From there, a van takes you 25 kilometers down Cataratas Highway to the Macuco Safari entrance, where you board open jeep-towed wagons for a three-kilometer stretch through the jungle. Multi-lingual guides point out orchids, palm trees, bromeliads, centenarian trees, and wild animals that cross the trail.
A 600-meter hiking trail leads down carved rock steps to Macuco Falls, which drops 20 meters from a natural pool. At the base, you board inflatable bi-motor boats equipped with life vests and waterproof containers for cameras. The boat travels upriver at a pace that lets you see the canyon and rapids. The high point is a section called "The Three Musketeers," where the captain maneuvers close enough to give passengers a quick, refreshing shower from the spray.
Hotel pickup and drop-off are included from most downtown hotels in Foz do Iguaçu or Puerto Iguazu. The Macuco portion lasts roughly two hours. With transfers, the full tour runs about four hours. Note that national park entrance fees are not included and must be purchased at the Visitor Center or online. If you're picked up in Puerto Iguazu to cross into Brazil, you'll pay an eco-tourism tax locally. Keep your receipt to avoid being charged twice.
