Snorkeling in João Fernandes: 30-minute dive initiation class
Thirty minutes underwater on a shallow reef, learning to dive as you go
A 60-minute diving initiation class at João Fernandes and João Fernandinho beaches pairs classroom instruction with 30 minutes of guided diving up to 8 meters deep among coral reefs, turtles and fish shoals. One instructor works with up to two people at a time, and the reef sits close enough to shore that you enter from the beach without a boat. Children from age 8 are welcome; daily check-in starts at 9 am.
The Experience
The class opens on the beach with theory—how the equipment works, how to breathe underwater, what to expect. Your instructor spends time with you in the shallows first, letting your body adjust to the sea before you descend. This is not a tour where you watch from the surface; you operate the regulator, the compensator vest and the fins yourself, with the guide right beside you correcting your form and keeping you safe. One instructor handles up to two divers, so the attention does not scatter.
The dive itself runs 30 minutes on a reef that reaches 8 meters down. You move through small caves, watch turtles rest on the coral bottom, and swim past the shoals of fish that live there. The reef is close enough to the beach that you walk in from the sand—no boat ride, no long journey to the site. The whole experience, from the moment you arrive to the moment you step back onto the beach, takes about an hour.
Full diving equipment is included: a 3 mm wetsuit, regulator, compensator vest, tank, mask and fins. The guides speak English, Spanish and Portuguese. Groups stay small by design—only your group gets served during your time slot, which means no crowding and no waiting for someone else's pace. Book in advance; daily sessions start at 9 am, though sea conditions can shift the location or the time.

Is this one for you?The 60-minute session includes time to adapt to the water before you descend, so this works for anyone trying diving for the first time—you're not rushed into depth, and the one-on-one attention means your pace sets the dive, not a group schedule.

Can I snorkel instead of diving on this class?
This is a diving initiation class, not a snorkeling trip. You'll learn to use scuba equipment and spend 30 minutes underwater with a regulator, not at the surface with a snorkel.
What's the water like at João Fernandes?
João Fernandes is a shallow reef close to the beach, reaching 8 meters at its deepest. You'll see coral, turtles resting on the bottom, and schools of tropical fish moving through the water.
How much time do I spend actually diving versus in the classroom?
The full session is 60 minutes. You spend time on the beach learning the basics and adapting to the water, then 30 minutes diving on the reef itself.
Do I need diving experience to book this?
No. This is an initiation class designed for people with no diving background. Your instructor teaches you the basics and stays with you the entire time underwater.
What age can children join?
Children are welcome from age 8 and up. Children under 8, pregnant women, and anyone who needs to fly within 12 hours after diving are not permitted.
Is there a boat ride to the reef?
No. The reef at João Fernandes sits close to the beach, so you walk in from the sand. No boat is needed to reach the dive site.
