The Experience

I didn’t expect to feel nervous again before a dive — but standing on João Fernandes beach, wetsuit half-zipped, I caught that old flutter in my stomach. Maybe it was the way the morning light hit the water, or just the quiet buzz of other divers getting ready. Our guide, Lucas, noticed and grinned, “First time here? Wait till you see the turtles.” He handed me my mask and we waded in together, fins awkward in the sand (I always forget how clumsy they make me feel out of water).

The water off Búzios is clearer than I’d imagined — not cold exactly, but there’s this fresh bite when you first sink below.
