The experience

The route starts at Colchani, where you watch salt processing and walk through piles of salt before entering the flats themselves. Incahuasi Island rises from the white plain: a volcanic rock formation topped with giant cactus that becomes an extraordinary viewpoint once you climb it. From there the tour continues to Fish Island and then Mala Mala Bay at the opposite end of the Salar, where Galaxy Cave holds ancestral burials and petrified cactus. You overnight in a basic salt hostel with a private room and bathroom.

Day two heads south into the desert toward the colored lagoons: Cañapa, Stinking, Chiarkota, Honda and Ramadita, where large numbers of flamingos gather alongside geese and Andean gulls. Snow-capped volcanoes flank these lagoons, their slopes covered in green vegetation. The landscape shifts through painted shades of sand and pebbles as you approach the lodge at Laguna Colorada, where you watch the sunset and stay overnight. The final day returns to Uyuni by 5 p.m., with photo stops along the way.

The tour operates year-round but the landscape changes dramatically between seasons. From May to October (dry season), the salt surface hardens and geometric polygons formed by salt particles become visible across the plain. From November to March (rainy season), the salt desert transforms into a giant mirror that reflects the sky. Your guide speaks English and travels with the group in a Toyota Land Cruiser 4WD throughout.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

What exactly is Incahuasi Island and why is it worth climbing?

Incahuasi Island is a volcanic rock formation rising from the middle of the salt flats, covered with giant cactus. Climbing to the top turns it into an extraordinary viewpoint across the white salt plain, giving you a sense of scale for the landscape you're crossing.

When is the best time to visit Salar de Uyuni, and does it change what I'll see?

The dry season runs May to October, when the hardened salt surface displays geometric polygons formed by salt particles. The rainy season from November to March transforms the salt desert into a mirror that reflects the sky. Both are visually distinct experiences of the same place.

What's included in the 3-day tour price?

The tour includes a professional English-speaking guide, transportation by Toyota Land Cruiser 4WD, two nights accommodation in basic salt hostels with private rooms and bathrooms, and all meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner each day). Entrance fees to the reserve are paid separately.

Do I need to arrange my own transport to the starting point?

Pickup is included in the tour, so you don't arrange separate transport to begin. The guide meets you and the group travels together by 4WD from the start.

Can I request vegetarian meals or accommodate dietary needs?

Vegetarian options are available. Advise the operator of your dietary requirements at the time of booking so they can arrange meals accordingly during the three days.
