The experience
The day starts at the Train Cemetery, where locomotives from the 19th and early 20th centuries sit rusting in the desert: German and English engines that once hauled minerals from Potosí down the mountain. From there you head north to Colchani, a salt-mining village 23 kilometers away, where families still extract and process salt by hand using ancestral methods. A salt museum there shows how the work happens and displays handicrafts made from salt by local artisans.
Then the flats themselves open up. The Uyuni Salt Flats cover more than 10,000 square kilometers of brilliant white, and the tour stops at the Dakar Monument and the salt pyramids before heading to Incahuasi Island, a rocky oasis that rises from the middle of the expanse. The island is home to giant cacti hundreds of years old, vizcachas and hummingbirds: a pocket of life in the heart of the desert. You hike through it and get panoramic views of the white landscape stretching in every direction. Along the way you also see the geysers, small openings where fresh and salty groundwater mix and bubble up through the surface.
The tour ends with sunset, when the flats turn gold and pink and the sky and land blur together. An outdoor picnic happens somewhere in the middle of the day, surrounded by that same endless white. Waterproof wellies are provided so you can walk on the mirror effect when water covers the flats during the rainy season. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and your hotel in Uyuni is where you start and finish.
