The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Uyuni and a drive into Salar de Uyuni, the vast white expanse visible from space. You'll stop at Colchani to watch salt processors at work, then move on to the salt mounds and water eyes where the landscape opens up for photographs. A short walk takes you to the top of an island for a panoramic view across the flats before lunch arrives: typical regional food served in a deserted area, away from the crowds that gather at the main stops.

As the sun drops, your guide drives to a section of the flats flooded with shallow water, where the sky and the ground become one reflection. The wine tasting and Bolivian cocktails happen here, in the middle of the salt, while the light changes. Once the sun sets, you're driven back to your accommodation in Uyuni. The whole experience runs nine to ten hours from pickup to return.

Is this one for you?Book this private tour if you want the salt flats without sharing a vehicle or stops with other groups: the fixed itinerary covers the train cemetery, salt mounds, water eyes and sunset reflection in a single nine-to-ten-hour day, and the wine tasting happens in the middle of the flats where few tourists venture.

Top questions

What is the train cemetery and where does it fit in the tour?

The train cemetery is a graveyard of abandoned locomotives from Bolivia's mining era, located within the Salar de Uyuni. It's one of the stops on the route, visited early in the day before you move deeper into the salt flats toward the mounds and water eyes.

Can I do this tour if I don't drink alcohol?

Yes. The wine tasting is included for guests 18 and older who wish to participate, but you're not required to take part. Bolivian cocktails are also offered, and bottled water and snacks are provided throughout the day.

How does the reflection at sunset actually work if it's a salt flat?

During certain seasons and in specific areas, shallow water pools collect on top of the salt, creating a mirror effect that reflects the sky and sunset. Your guide takes you to one of these flooded sections in the late afternoon so you can see the effect as the light changes.

Is this tour accessible if I have mobility concerns?

The tour is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all physical fitness levels. Specialized infant seats are available if you're traveling with young children. Let the operator know about any specific needs when you book so they can prepare.

What should I bring or wear for a full day on the salt flats?

Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat: the white salt reflects intense sun. Wear layers because temperatures drop significantly at sunset. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for the short walks to the island viewpoint and around the salt mounds. The operator provides bottled water and snacks, but you may want to bring additional items.
