The experience
The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, and this tour puts you in the middle of it for the night. You start with a private pickup from Uyuni Airport or your hotel, then travel in a 4WD vehicle with an English-speaking guide. The first stop is the Train Cemetery, where old locomotives and railway wagons from Bolivia's mining era sit abandoned in the desert: a striking landscape for photography and a window into the region's history. From there you move to Colchani, a small village on the edge of the flats where local families still process salt using ancestral methods. You'll see the artisan shops and salt museums that show how the community works.
Then you enter the Salar itself. The horizon disappears as you drive across the white expanse, stopping at viewpoints chosen for their light and reflections. You visit Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop covered in giant cacti several meters tall, with petrified coral formations that mark where a prehistoric lake once stood. Walking the marked trails up to higher points gives you panoramic views over the endless white landscape. Lunch happens in the middle of the flats. In the afternoon you head toward Tunupa Volcano on the northern edge, where you can see pink flamingos in nearby lagoons, herds of llamas and vicuñas, and stop at traditional villages and small local museums to learn about Andean life. As the day ends, you return to watch the sunset reflect off the white landscape, with a special sunset toast to mark the moment.
You sleep in deluxe camping at the foot of Tunupa Volcano, in the middle of the salt flats. The second morning brings a spectacular sunrise from the campsite. After breakfast prepared by your guide, you return to Uyuni. Dinner on day one and breakfast on day two are included, along with lunch in the flats.
