The Experience

The jeep rolls out of Uyuni town and within minutes the asphalt ends. You're driving straight onto the Salar de Uyuni—the world's largest salt flat, stretching more than 4,050 square miles across the Altiplano at 12,000 feet. The ground beneath you is a thick crust of salt, quilted with polygonal patterns that rise from the earth like a frozen puzzle. There's no road, no markers, just white in every direction. The first stop is the Train Cemetery, about 3 kilometers from town—over 100 rusted locomotives and rail cars scattered across the outskirts, most of them imported from Britain in the early 20th century. The salt winds have hollowed them out completely, stripped the metal down to skeletal frames. You can climb inside, walk through the corroded cabins, touch the decay. It's a graveyard for a railway project that never happened, abandoned over a century ago because of technical problems and border disputes. After that, you drive to Colchani, a village of 600 people built on salt extraction. The local cooperative processes 25,000 tonnes of salt annually, and you'll see the salt ponds, the handicrafts carved from salt blocks, and if you want, a local will walk you through the salt factory—it's free, but a donation is expected. The Salt Museum is quick, maybe 5 to 10 minutes, but it's made entirely of salt bricks and sculptures, so it's worth the stop.

By afternoon you're back on the flats, heading toward Incahuasi Island—a rocky outcrop 80 kilometers west of Colchani, surrounded by that white sea of hexagonal tiles. The hike to the top takes 15 minutes, and the trail loops back down. The island is covered in Trichocereus cacti, tall and spindly, and from the summit you see nothing but salt in every direction. The entry fee is 30 bolivianos. That night you sleep in a salt hotel, walls and furniture all carved from salt blocks. It's surreal and cold, and you'll understand why the guide brings extra blankets.

Day two takes you south into the high desert. You pass Ollague volcano—5,868 meters, straddling the Bolivia-Chile border—and drive through the Siloli Desert at 15,000 feet, where the air is thin and the landscape is barren. There's a stone tree here, a 22-foot sandstone formation carved by wind over millions of years into something that looks almost deliberate. Then comes Laguna Colorada, the red lake. The water is stained orange-red by algae and microorganisms, dotted with white pools of borax deposits. James's flamingos—rare, endangered, nearly extinct in the 1950s—still nest here. You spend the night in basic accommodation, which means simple and cold, but you're 4,300 meters up on the altiplano, so that's expected.

The final morning starts before dawn at the geysers—Sol de Mañana, meaning "morning sun." Pools of boiling mud bubble and hiss, and the strongest geyser shoots pressurized steam 160 feet into the air. There are no safety barriers, so the risk is on you. After that, the Dali Desert, named for the surrealist painter—brown and ochre hues, random rock piles, deep blue sky, snowy volcano peaks. Then comes the Green Lagoon beneath Licancábur volcano, though it's less vibrant than it used to be. The whole tour is three days, includes two nights' accommodation, round-trip transport, tea, coffee, snacks, and a first aid kit. The guide speaks Spanish.
