Step-by-step itinerary

Salt Flats and Sunset Photography

  • Visit Train Cemetery for vintage photos
  • Explore Colchani town market
  • Tour salt mounds and Dakar Monument
  • Enjoy lunch in the salt desert
  • Visit island with giant cacti
  • Sunset photography at water region

The experience

The tour starts at the Train Cemetery, where vintage locomotives from the late 1800s sit abandoned across the landscape: ideal for black and white photography before the day heats up. From there you head to Colchani, a small town about 25 minutes away with a local market for salt souvenirs, then enter the salt desert itself. You'll stop at salt mounds where extraction happens, the Dakar Monument, and a salt hotel museum where travelers often leave flags as a marker.

Around 1 p.m., the guide sets up a full lunch with tables and chairs in the middle of the salt flat: a surreal meal with nothing but white horizon around you. After eating, you visit Incahuasi, an island in the desert populated by giant cacti, and climb to a small viewer for the landscape. The core of the day is the sunset program in the water region, where shallow water creates a perfect mirror of the sky. This is when silhouette and reflection photography becomes possible as the light changes across the salt.

The vehicle is a private 4x4 shared with no more than three other travelers, which keeps the group small enough to find quiet spots away from crowds. Your guide speaks English and focuses on photography rather than general commentary, positioning you for shots and explaining light and composition as the day progresses. Water boots are provided, along with an oxygen tank (the altitude at Uyuni is high), and the tour runs eight to nine hours total.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What is the Train Cemetery and why is it good for photography?

The Train Cemetery holds vintage locomotives and trains from the late 1800s abandoned across open ground, making it an ideal location for black and white photography with strong lines and texture against a clear sky.

Do I need to bring my own camera or photography experience?

You bring your own camera. The guide is trained in photography and will help you position yourself for shots and explain how light and reflection work in the water region, but no prior experience is required.

What happens during the sunset program in the water region?

The water region is a shallow area of the salt flat that mirrors the sky and creates perfect conditions for silhouette photography as the sun sets. You'll photograph the reflection and the sun's colors changing across the water and salt.

Is lunch included, and what are the meal options?

Lunch is included and set up with tables and chairs in the middle of the salt desert around 1 p.m. A vegetarian option is available if you request it when booking.

What should I wear and bring for a full day on the salt flats?

Trekking shoes are recommended for walking on salt and cactus terrain. Water boots are provided by the tour. Bring sun protection, a hat, and layers: the altitude and open landscape mean strong sun during the day and cold at sunset.

How many people travel in the 4x4, and will there be other groups?

The 4x4 is private and holds a maximum of four travelers total, ensuring you travel only with your own group and have flexibility to stop for photography without coordinating with other vehicles.
