After watching that, the thermal pools at 37 degrees Celsius feel like a gift — you can actually swim here, which is surreal given the altitude and the barren rock around you. The Green Lagoon, stained emerald by copper and arsenic in the geological formations, sits in view of the Licancabur volcano and the white lagoon beyond. From there, the minivan transfer to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile takes the rest of the morning, and you arrive around noon on the Chilean side.

Accommodation both nights is in shared-bathroom hostels — San Juan on night one, a dormitory setup on night two — which keeps costs down and means you'll meet other travelers doing the same loop. The 4x4 vehicle is included, as is the driver and guide who know these routes in detail. Bring layers: the salt flat is exposed and the altitude means temperature swings are sharp.
