The experience

The day starts with a scenic drive from Placencia along the peninsula road between the Caribbean Sea and Placencia Lagoon to reach a real Mayan kitchen. There you'll learn to make tortillas and tamales from scratch over a fire hearth, working alongside your guide who shares stories about how Mayans live, work and raise their families. You prepare the meal you'll eat for lunch, so you get to taste what you've made and ask questions as you cook. Bring a phone or camera to record the techniques so you can recreate them at home.

After lunch, the class moves to a cacao farm where you see how the beans are grown, harvested and dried. Then you head to the small chocolate factory to make chocolate the old-fashioned way, grinding cacao beans by hand and forming your own chocolate bar to take with you. The whole experience is built around doing the work yourself, not watching a demonstration.
