The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how red everything looked from up here — not just the ground, but even the light seemed to bounce off Uluru in this burnt-orange way I didn’t expect. Our pilot, Dave (who grew up nearby), pointed out the long shadow stretching across the desert. He said you can only really see how massive Uluru is when you’re looking down at it like this. I tried to take a photo but honestly, my phone just couldn’t get it right. The air felt dry even inside the plane; you could smell dust and something almost metallic when we took off.

We circled over Kata Tjuta next — those domes look so different from above, like someone dropped marbles in the sand. Dave told us parts of this area are sacred and totally off-limits on foot, which made seeing them from the plane feel kind of special. There was this moment where everyone went quiet at once (even the kid behind me stopped kicking my seat), just watching the sun flicker across those weird rock curves. I think I held my breath for a second without realizing it.

The whole scenic flight over Uluru & Kata Tjuta only took about 40 minutes but it felt longer in a good way — time sort of stretched out while we were up there. The headset commentary helped me understand what I was looking at (and also covered up my nervous laugh when we hit a tiny bump). After landing, our driver was already waiting to take us back to the hotel, which honestly was nice because my brain needed a minute to catch up with what I’d just seen. Still thinking about that color.
