The experience
The Uluru–Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre opens the day with the Tjukurpa tunnel, where you read the history, flora and fauna of the park before your Driver Guide takes you on a short walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole at the base of Uluru. There you stand in front of ancient rock art and hear the stories of traditional Anangu life: specifically the creation story of Kuniya and Liru, told in the ochre and stone you're looking at. The guide provides comprehensive commentary on the significance of the rock art, the area's desert plants and animals, and the culture of the Anangu, the traditional owners of this land.
Later you travel to the Uluru sunset viewing area and settle in with sparkling wine as the sun sets over the western horizon. The evening sky brings out the shades of colour Uluru is known for: the rock shifts through reds and oranges as the light changes. After sunset, the coach returns you to your resort. If you choose the BBQ dinner option at checkout, you stay on in the national park at a site set amongst red sand dunes and desert oak trees. You'll eat Australian meats and salads with wine, beer or orange juice, then the guide conducts a tour of the night sky, pointing out visible constellations with a high beam spotlight (weather permitting). Tea, coffee and dessert follow.
