The walk starts before dawn. You drive through the entry station of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and begin the trek around the base as the sky shifts. The 12-kilometre trail is even ground with a moderate pace, and your guide walks it with you, stopping to point out waterholes, rock art left by the ancients, and the places where the Tjukurpa stories unfold across the stone. Kuniya the woma python and Liru the venomous snake are characters in creation narratives that explain the rock's shape, the patterns on its face, and why certain places matter to the Anangu people who have lived here for tens of thousands of years.

Breakfast arrives partway through. The outback picnic—tea, coffee and light food—comes in a supplied satchel your guide carries, so you eat on the trail without breaking the rhythm of the walk. You see sunrise from the base of Uluru itself, not from a viewing area set back from the rock, which changes what the light looks like and what you can hear in the quiet.
