The experience

The experience starts with a truffle tasting and an informative talk on why truffles command such high prices among top chefs, then moves to the truffiere itself. You'll walk through a biosecurity footbath before entering the growing area to learn about the different truffle varieties RedGround cultivates. The trained hunting dogs do the real work. You follow them through the trees until they indicate a truffle buried beneath the soil, then watch as it's uncovered and assessed for ripeness and quality. If you want to try digging one up yourself, you can.

Back at the Truffle Hunting Lodge, the tasting part of the day unfolds in courses. You'll eat baked truffled garlic, spinach and artichoke cheesy dip with sourdough bread, then move through truffled canapés, truffled panna cotta, and truffled ice cream. Between tastings, you'll hear how truffles are graded by quality. The final course is a sweet truffle dish. Fresh truffles are available to purchase if you want to take them home.

Is this one for you?Small groups work best for this hunt, since the dogs need to focus and the lodge has limited space for tastings. If you're traveling with others who share an interest in food and want a hands-on morning rather than a passive tour, this fits the day well.
