The Experience

The boat leaves Cairns and runs 90 minutes to the outer reef, where you spend up to five hours at two moorings selected from Norman, Saxon, and Hastings reefs. AquaQuest is built for this work: a spacious dive deck, a sunken platform that lets you step straight into the water without climbing down a ladder, and air-conditioned indoor space when you need a break. The coral here is vibrant, and the marine life—turtles, stingrays, Nemo fish, Maori Wrasse—shows up regularly enough that you will see something.

Your choice of activity shapes the day. Snorkelers get the full reef experience from the surface. First-time divers receive comprehensive instruction on the boat before entering the water, so you can try a single introductory dive without certification. Certified divers can do up to three dives, and you'll need to bring evidence of your certification card. All equipment is supplied—wetsuits, tanks, regulators, weights—so you pack only your swimsuit and sunscreen. After the morning session, a generous buffet lunch with hot and cold dishes, salads, rolls and tropical fruit refuels you for the afternoon. Hot freshwater showers are available throughout the day.

The 8.5-hour trip includes morning and afternoon tea. You'll need moderate fitness and a clean bill of health: all participants complete a medical questionnaire before diving, and some conditions—spinal injuries, pregnancy, cardiovascular issues—may prevent participation. Queensland law requires you to wait at least 24 hours after diving before flying or going to altitude. Bring a hat, towel, swimsuit, sunscreen, sunglasses and a card for any extras you want to buy on board.
