The Experience

You know that feeling when you step onto a boat and everything smells like sunscreen and sea air? That’s how our day started in Cairns, heading out to the Great Barrier Reef. The crew welcomed us right away, but it was the Indigenous Sea Rangers who set the tone—one of them, Justin, smiled and handed me a shell instrument I definitely couldn’t play. He laughed when I tried (it sounded like a sick duck), but showed me how they use it for signaling. I didn’t expect to get hands-on before we’d even left the dock.

The ride out to Moore Reef took about an hour and a half. It’s hard to describe the color of the water—somewhere between turquoise and something you only see in postcards. Justin told us about his grandmother teaching him reef lore as a kid; he pointed out birds overhead and explained their names in his language (I forgot them instantly, which he said happens to everyone). When we anchored up, you could hear people getting nervous about snorkeling—I was one of them. But they gave us a quick lesson, showed us how to fit our masks, and suddenly we were floating over coral gardens. The fish looked fake at first—like someone painted them just for tourists.

Lunch was this big buffet spread—nothing fancy but honestly perfect after swimming for two hours. I sat next to one of the rangers who told me about their Creation Story while we dried off in the sun. There’s something grounding about hearing those stories out there with salt still on your skin. Later we moved to Milln Reef (or maybe Flynn—I lost track), spent another few hours in the water. Saw a turtle glide by so close I almost forgot to breathe. You can’t really capture that feeling in photos.

I keep thinking about that moment under water when everything went quiet except my own breath echoing in my mask. On the way back, afternoon tea appeared (scones are always better at sea?) and people just sat quietly or swapped stories with the crew. Didn’t feel like a tour so much as being let into someone else’s world for a bit—which is probably why it stuck with me more than any other day trip from Cairns.
