The Experience
The first thing I remember is the salty breeze hitting my face as we left Cairns behind—just twelve of us, plus crew, on this little boat called Coral Sea Dreaming. I’d never slept out on the Great Barrier Reef before. Our guide, Sarah, had this easy way of explaining things—she handed me a mask and said, “Don’t overthink it.” I tried not to. The water was that unreal turquoise you see in postcards but somehow less flashy in person. More... honest? There were parrotfish crunching coral under me and someone laughed when I came up sputtering because I’d forgotten how salty the sea really tastes.
By late afternoon, the sun went gold and everyone got quiet for a bit—except for Dave (the instructor), who kept cracking jokes about his wetsuit being too tight after lunch. Dinner was simple but good; I still think about that hot tea after my first dive. At night, some of us tried the night dive (I chickened out but watched their torches bobbing below). Lying in my bunk later, everything smelled faintly of seaweed and sunscreen and something metallic from the gear room. It’s weird how quickly you get used to the gentle rocking—like being half-awake all night.
Next morning we moved to another reef site—Sarah said it was her favorite spot but wouldn’t say why until we saw it ourselves. The light underwater was different at sunrise, softer somehow, and there were these tiny blue fish everywhere like confetti. I lost track of time snorkeling around until breakfast called me back (still slightly shivering). We all swapped stories over eggs and toast—someone’s mask fogged up so badly they missed a turtle right beside them. That sort of thing sticks with you more than you expect.
What’s included
