Step-by-step itinerary

Great Barrier Reef snorkel and dive trip

  • Board Silverswift catamaran by 8:30am
  • Visit three reef sites: Flynn, Milln, Thetford
  • Snorkel or dive at each reef site
  • Enjoy guided snorkel tour option
  • Have tropical buffet lunch on board
  • Relax on sun-deck and use facilities
  • Return to Cairns after 5 hours in water

The Experience

The crew member checking you in at Reef Fleet Terminal around 8am doesn't rush you through—she asks if it's your first time on the reef, whether you've dived before, what you're hoping to see. That kind of attention carries through the whole day on Silverswift, the 29-meter catamaran that becomes your floating base. You board between 8 and 8:30am, and from there the boat heads out to three different sites—Flynn, Milln and Thetford reefs—each one showing you a different angle of what makes the Great Barrier Reef worth traveling for. The sites have wall dives, swim-throughs and overhangs, so whether you're a certified diver or someone trying scuba for the first time, there's something that fits your level.

You get up to five hours total in the water across the three stops, which sounds like a lot until you're actually down there and realize how fast it goes. If you've never dived before, you can do one or two introductory dives with the crew walking you through it, or stick to snorkeling and join the guided reef tour instead—the choice is yours, and you're not locked in until you book. Certified divers can do up to three dives. Either way, you're seeing staghorn coral, table coral, plate coral, boulder coral, soft corals in colors that don't quite match what your phone camera will capture later, and fish species that move in schools so thick they block out the light for a second. The reef guide points things out on the snorkel tour—the small stuff you'd miss on your own, the behavior of certain fish, why the coral grows the way it does.

Between sites the boat serves a tropical buffet lunch, and there's morning and afternoon tea, fresh water showers to rinse off the salt, and a full bar if you want something cold after being in the sun. The sun-decks are wide enough that you're not packed in, and the crew answers questions all day without making you feel like you're slowing them down. The boat itself is modern and well-maintained, though during scheduled maintenance it might be operated by a different vessel—the operator will let you know if that happens. You're back on the dock by late afternoon, which leaves your evening open.

What’s included

  • Your day includes snorkel and dive equipment, use of prescription masks if needed, a tropical buffet lunch served between sites, morning and afternoon tea, a guided snorkel tour with a reef guide, your choice of snorkeling or introductory or certified diving depending on your experience level, and the environmental management charge.
  • If you're diving, all dive equipment is provided.
  • A professional guide is with you throughout, and the crew answers questions all day.
