The Experience

I didn’t know what to expect when we climbed onto the bus that morning in Oranjestad—honestly, I was just hoping for some sun and maybe a bit of local color. But right away, our guide (I think his name was Franklin?) started telling stories about growing up here, pointing out those sideways Divi Divi trees that always seem to be leaning into the wind. The air smelled faintly sweet near the Aruba Aloe Factory—like cut grass mixed with something herbal—and I kept rubbing my fingers together after touching one of the leaves. We learned how aloe’s been part of Aruba for over a century; I bought a tiny bottle for my mom, even though she says she doesn’t need souvenirs anymore.

The drive between stops felt like flipping through postcards—one minute desert rocks and cacti, next thing you’re staring at turquoise water. At the California Lighthouse, everyone got quiet for a second looking out over the island. There was this weird mix of dry heat and salty breeze up there. A couple from Rotterdam tried to climb all the way up but came back down laughing about their knees (I get it). Alto Vista Chapel was smaller than I pictured—yellow walls against blue sky—and a guy selling coconut water smiled when I tried to say “bon bini.” He laughed but handed me an extra straw anyway.

I still think about the Natural Bridge—the old one collapsed years ago but you can walk right up to what’s left. The sound of waves hitting rock is louder than you’d guess. Casibari Rock Formation was more of a scramble than I expected (my shoes are still dusty), but worth it for that panoramic view. And then finally, Baby Beach: shallow water so clear you could see your toes forever. Lunch wasn’t included but we found this beach shack where the fish tasted like it had just come off someone’s boat. I lost track of time floating around before we headed back toward town—felt sunburned and kind of happy-tired in that good way.
