The Experience

The van door slid open and that first slap of warm Aruba air hit me—salty but with this faint green scent. We’d barely buckled up before our guide, Maria, started chatting about Divi Divi trees (they really do lean like they’re always bracing for wind). First stop was the Aruba Aloe Factory & Museum. I didn’t expect to care much about aloe but honestly, watching them slice those thick leaves open—gel so clear it looked fake—I got weirdly into it. The factory had this clean, almost medicinal smell, and the shop was tempting. I bought a tiny bottle for sunburns because…well, you never know.

Maria joked that the donkeys at the Donkey Sanctuary are “the real locals.” She handed us carrot sticks and one donkey (I think his name was Chico?) nudged my arm until I gave in. There’s something calming about their slow blinking and big ears. The sanctuary felt peaceful—just birds calling somewhere and the sound of hooves on dry ground. I didn’t expect to feel so chill there; maybe it’s just Aruba working its magic or maybe it’s the donkeys being so… unbothered by everything.

Finally we rolled down to Baby Beach. The lagoon is shallow enough that even little kids were splashing around without worry. The water was warm—almost too warm at first—and clear enough to see your own toes wiggle in the sand. Snorkeling wasn’t dramatic but I did spot a few darting fish under the surface. Lunch was at this open-air spot right on the sand; I ordered grilled fish and tried not to get too much sand in my fries (failed). Maria said if you squint at the horizon you can sometimes see Venezuela—not sure if she was teasing us or not.
