The Experience

Lake Sevan sits at 1,900 meters above sea level, ringed by mountains that climb to 3,000 meters and higher. The water is volcanic in origin and the landscape around it is the reason the tour opens there—the lake itself is the anchor, and the peninsula where Sevanavank monastery stands is the vantage point from which the whole expanse becomes visible. The monastery was built in 874 on the order of Princess Mariam, and the silhouette of its churches against the turquoise water and sky is what the itinerary names as the defining view. You walk the peninsula grounds and stand in that frame.

From the lake, the route moves inland to Dilijan, a town inside Dilijan National Park known for its dense forests—the region is called "Armenian Switzerland" for the way the woodlands wrap the valleys. Haghartsin monastery comes next, built in the 10th and 11th centuries and set deep in those same forests. The complex includes three churches—St. Grigor, St. Astvatsatsin and St. Stepanos—and a refectory whose architecture is the detail the itinerary singles out. An oak tree nearly as old as the monastery itself stands in the grounds. The monastery was recently renovated with support from the Ruler of Sharjah, and the restoration is visible in the stonework and the condition of the buildings.

Goshavank, the final stop, was founded by Mkhitar Gosh, a medieval scientist and fabulist, and once served as one of Armenia's most important religious and cultural centers. The complex holds several religious and secular buildings, and in front of the one-naved basilica stands a khachkar—a carved stone cross—created by the master Poghos in 1291. The site is surrounded by green territory, and the itinerary notes the views.
